Variation Flashcards
Define evolution
As a change in the inherited characteristics of a population over time through a process of material selection which may result in the formation of a new specie
Natural selection
1) individual in a specie show a wide range of variation due to mutation
2) individual with characteristic most suited to the environment are more likely to survive and reproduce
The gene that allowed the individual to be successful are passed to the offspring in the next generation
What happen when not suited
Death
Extinction (for specie)
Antibiotics resistance define
A random mutation might cause some bacteria to become resistant to certain antibiotics such as penicillin
Antibiotics resistance process
A group of bacteria including genetically resistant ones ar exposed to an antiobiotic
Most of the sensitive ones die
The genetically resistant bacteria start multiplying
Eventually the resistant strain replaces the strain affected by antibiotic
Selective breeding define
Artificial selection
Humans to develop new organism with desirable characteristics
Individual with desirable characteristics are selected to breed
Steps for selective breeding
1) select the organism with desired characteristics
2) breed them together
3) select the offspring with desired characteristics and breed them together
4) repeat the process for many generations
Features of natural selection
Occurs naturally
Results in development of population with features that are better adapted to their environment and survival
Usually takes a long time
Features of selective breeding
Occurs when human intervene
Results in the development of population with features that are useful to humans and not necessarily for the survival of individual
Take less time as only individual with desir3d features are allowed to reproduce
