Variables Flashcards
1
Q
What is an independent variable
A
Aspects of the experimental situation that is manipulated by the researcher- or changes naturally- so the effect on the DV can be measured
2
Q
What is a Dependant variable
A
The variable that is measured by the researcher. Any effect on the DV should be caused by the change in IV.
3
Q
What are Extraneous Variables
A
They are ‘nuisance’ variables that ‘muddy the water’ and may make it more difficult to detect an effect. A researcher may control some of these.
4
Q
What are Confounding Variables
A
They change systematically with the IV so we cannot be sure if any observed change in the DV is due to the CV or the IV
