Experimantal Designs Flashcards
What is an independent group design
When one group does condition A and a second group does condition B.
Participants should be randomly allocated to experimental groups
What are positives of independent group design
No order effects-participants only tested once so no practice/boredom/fatigue effects
Will not guess aim-participants only tested once so won’t guess aims this will lead to more natural behaviour
What are negatives of independent group designs
Participant variables-participants in groups are different acting as EV/CV
Less economical-twice as many participants so more time recruiting which is expensive
What are repeated measures designs
When same participants take part in all conditions of the experiment.
The order of conditions should be counterbalanced to avoid order effects
What are positives of repeated measures designs
Participant variables-person in both conditions has same characteristics
Fewer participants-less time recruiting so cheaper
What are negatives of repeated measures designs
Order effects-may do worse or better when doing a similar task twice. Practice/boredom/fatigue effects
Participants guess aims-this may change their behaviour
What is a matched pairs design
When two groups of participants are used but they are also related to each other by being paired on participant variables that matter for the experiment
What are positives of matched pairs design
Participant variables-matched on a variable relevant to experiment
No order effects-participants tested once(no effects)
What are negatives of matched pairs design
Matching is not perfect-time consuming and can’t control all variables
More participants-same as independent group and is time consuming and expensive
