Types Of Data Flashcards
What is qualitative data
Non-numerical data expressed in words
Evaluation of qualitative data
Strength-much broader in scope than quantitative data meaning greater external validity
Weakness-difficult to analyse and find patterns to make comparisons
What is quantitative data
Numerical data
Evaluation of quantitative data
Strength-easier to analyse and can draw graphs and calculate averages so comparisons can be made
Weakness-less detail than qualitative so lower external validity
What is primary data
First hand data collected for the purpose of investigation
Evaluation of primary data
Strength- study designed to extract only the data needed, info directly relevant to research aims
What is secondary data
Collected by someone other than the person who is conducting the research e.g work if other psychologists or government data
Evaluation of secondary data
Strength-inexpensive as desired info may already exist requires little effort
Weakness- quality may be poor, outdated or incomplete
What is a meta analysis
A type of secondary data that involves combining data from a large number of studies
Evaluation of meta analysis
Strength-increases validity of conclusions, eventual sample size is much larger than individual sample which increases generalisations
Weakness- publication bias, researcher may not select all relevant studies leaving out negative or non significant data
What are the 3 measures of central tendencies
Mean
Median
Mode
What are the 2 measures of dispersion
Range and standard deviation
