What led to dam building in Tennessee?
After the US market crash in 1929 and subsequent depression, in the 1940s a number of dams were built on the Tennessee river
John F Kennedy supported the works to create new jobs and stimulate regional economies
What was wrong with the foundations of the dam building?
The cost benefit analysis for the dams was only 0.8:1 and TVA continued with construction after massaging this CBA
What was the ecological problem with the dam building?
In 1973 there was the discovery that in the Little Tennessee river was the last place with significant numbers of snail darters remaining

Project was 70-80% completed before it was halted, despite having spent $166 million

Congressman John Duncan passed pill which exempted Tellico from the endangered species act, dam project is completed

360 acres of land and 120 acres woodland were cleared to make way for the road
Newbury bypass protests?
Largest anti-road protests in European history with 700 people demonstrating at the site

Cost of policing was ~ £5 million
Cost of private sector security guards and fencing ~ 23.7 million
Ecological problem with the bypass?
New snail species was found in the area which was protected under the Annex 11a of the EU habitats and species directive

What is Round-up Ready?
Monsanto owns and licenses a patent on the genes and cells that confer resistance to some herbicides, and sell seeds containing the patented gene (Round up Ready)
What happened with Monsanto and local farmer?
Monsanto discovered that 95-98% of the crop produced by local farmer Percy Schmeiser, consisted of Roundup Ready plants
What was the court ruling on the Monsanto case?
Ruled that there had been an infringement, as seeds were dispersed by the wind but Scheiser had collected and planted the seeds
No damages were owed however as no additional profits were made by the farmer
