Validity & Reliability Flashcards
Definition: Whether you are measuring what you intend to measure
Validity
Definition: Refers to the consistency of a researching study or measuring test
Reliability
Definition: The internal consistency of a measure. If a test or measure is made up of different parts, then they should all measure the same thing
Internal reliability
Definition: The extent to which a measure is consistent and results could be replicated if tested again. If you were to replicate the study, would you get the same results?
External reliability
Definition: Conduct the test and then repeat it at a later date
Test / retest reliability
Definition: Split the test in half and then the participant completes both halves
Split-half reliability
Definition: Compare the ratings of two or more individuals to see if there is any difference
Inter-rater reliability
Definition: The extent to which a test appears to measure what it intends to
Face validity (internal)
Definition: Whether a measure is in agreement with another pre-existing measure that has been validated to test for the same thing
Concurrent validity (internal)
Definition: Whether a measure successfully measures the concept it is supposed to measure
Construct validity (internal)
Definition: The extent to which data is generalisable to world, based on conditions research is
conducted under and procedures involves.
Ecological validity (external)
Definition: The extent to which results from a sample relate to the general population
Population validity (external)
Definition: The extent to which results from one time point relate to another time point
Temporal validity (external)
