Definition: pre-set list of written questions to which a participant responds
Questionnaires
Definition: Questions which allow participants to provide as much or as little detail as they wish in response to a question. Provides a space to write and answer and there are no pre-determined options to select from.
Open questions
Definition: Questions which allow participants to select from options that are pre-determined.
Closed questions
Definition: Questions which provide a specific list of options of which one can be selected
forced/fixed choice questions
Definition: Questions which allow participants to indicate how much they agree or disagree with a statement.
Likert scale
Definition: Respondents are asked to give an assessment or their views using a scale.
Rating scale
Definition: Questions which give participants opportunity to indicate preferences through ranking the options.
Ranking scale
Definition: Questions which allow participants to indicate their attitudes towards something on a scale between two opposite words.
Semantic differential rating scale
Definition: Questions which allow respondents to choose multiple options from a predetermined list
Checklist
Definition: Any method in which a person is asked to state or explain their own feelings, opinions, behaviours and/or experiences related to a given topic
Self-report
Definition: “live” encounters (face-to-face or on the phone) where one person ask a set of questions to assess and participants thoughts and/or experiences.
Interview
Definition: predetermined set of questions that are asked in a fixed order. This is like a questionnaire but conducted face-to-face (or on the phone) in real time.
Structured interviews
Definition: like a conversation, no set questions, there is a general aim and a certain topic will be discussed, interaction tends to be free-flowing. The interviewee is encouraged to expand and elaborate their answers as prompted by the interviewer.
Unstructured interview
Definition: There is a list of questions worked out beforehand but interviewee and the interviewer are free to ask other questions.
Semi-structured interview
Definition: respondents give answers to questions that they believe will make them look good to others, concealing their true opinions or experiences.
Social desirability bias
