Definition: particular group or type of person
Whole/general population
Definition: a group of people who the researcher is investigating
Target population
Definition: the group of people taking part in the research investigation
Sample
Definition: method used to select participants from the population
Sampling technique
Definition: when certain types of people are over or under-represented
Bias
Definition: The extent to which findings and conclusions from an investigation can be broadly applied to the population.
Generalisation
Definition: All members of the public have an equal chance of being selected. Lottery method
Random Sampling
Definition: Every nth member of the target population is selected
Systematic sampling
Definition: The composition of the sample reflects the proportion of people in certain subgroups (strata) within the target / wider population
Stratified sample
Definition: Participants self-select themselves to be involved. E.g. through an ad / poster
