Q

how might standardised symptoms in diagnostic manuals affect the validity and reliability of diagnosis? (4)

A

+allows doctors to predict progress of symptoms (predictive validity) and drugs that can help
+aetiological validity-can compare/match up symptoms of person and manual
+standardised symptoms can base off when different doctors are diagnosing (inter-rater reliability)
-standardise symptoms-easy to fake/lie about symptoms when diagnosing-reduced validity of diagnosis

Q

how might the DSM and ICD differences affect the validity and reliability of diagnosis?

A
  • affects reliability-different doctors might diagnose differently-cultural differences
  • acts predictive validity- cultural differences=different data on illnesses
  • affects retest if diagnosed with both manuals
  • concurrent- 2 seperate tests might not give same diagnosis

Q

how might the co-morbidity affect the validity and reliability of diagnosis?

A

-doctors may diagnose one condition only and another doctor diagnose the other condition- affects validity and reliability and treatment-mistake symptoms for one condition that’s from the other

Q

how might updates to the DSM and the ICD affect reliability or construct validity?

A

updates may change diagnosis criteria affecting reliability of diagnosis.
