vaccines Flashcards
which vaccines pose a risk to immunocompromised patients
Live attenuated
BCG
measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)
influenza (intranasal)
oral rotavirus
oral polio
yellow fever
oral typhoid
Inactivated preparations
rabies
hepatitis A
influenza (intramuscular)
Toxoid (inactivated toxin)
tetanus
corynebacterium diphtheria
bordettella pertussis
what are Subunit and conjugate vaccines ?
Subunit means that only part of the pathogen is used to generate an immunogenic response.
A conjugate vaccine is a particular type that links the poorly immunogenic bacterial polysaccharide outer coats to proteins to make them more immunogenic
Subunit and conjugate vaccines
pneumococcus (conjugate)
haemophilus (conjugate)
meningococcus (conjugate)
hepatitis B
human papillomavirus
BCG vaccine does not prevent
primary infection with tuberculosis
does not provide reliable protection against any forms of TB in adults
so why is BCG vaccines still used in children once or even sometimes twice ?
protective against severe diseases in children, particularly TB meningitis and disseminated TB in children.
preventive in TB meningitis
