Vaccinations and Medicinal drugs Flashcards
What does a vaccine contain?
A small amount of a dead or inactive microorganism.
How does a vaccination prevent infection?
The white blood cells rapidly produce antibodies to kill the pathogen. even though the pathogen is harmless, this means that if a pathogen of the same type appears again after the vaccination, the white blood cells can rapidly mass-produce antibodies to kill off the pathogen
What is one pro and con of vaccines?
Pro: They can prevent epidemics
Con: There can be bad side effects
What do painkillers do?
They relieve pain and symptoms.
What do antibiotics do?
Kill or prevent growth of bacteria.
Why can’t antibiotics be used to treat measles?
Antibiotics do not kill viruses because viruses live inside the cells/
Why do antibiotics become less useful at treating an infection if the antibiotic is overused?
The pathogens develop resistance to the effects of the antibiotics.
