What are hormones?
Chemical messengers that travel in the blood to activate cells.
What are the three main differences between nerves and hormones?
Nerves: fast action, short time, precise area
Hormone: slower action, long time, general way
What is the menstrual cycle?
The monthly release of an egg from a woman’s ovaries.
Describe the four stages of the menstrual cycle.
Stage 1: Lining of the uterus breaks down
Stage 2: Lining of the uterus builds up
Stage 3: Egg is released
Stage 4: Lining of the uterus is maintained
Where is FSH produced and what does it do?
It’s produced in the pituitary gland and it causes an egg to mature and the ovaries to produce oestrogen.
Where is oestrogen produced and what does it do?
It’s produced in the ovaries and it causes the pituitary gland to produce LH and inhibits further release of FSH.
Where is LH produced and what does it do?
It’s produced in the pituitary gland and it stimulates the release of an egg.
