What is an uncomplicated UTI?
Usual organism in a patient with a normal urinary tract and normal urinary function
What is a complicated UTI?
UTI when one or more factors are present that predispose the person to persistent infection
What is urethral atrophy?
Increases risk of UTI in post menopausal women
Reduction in oestrogen = thinner epithelium
Indications for a catheter
Haematuria Obstruction Urological surgery Decubitus I&O Neurogenic bladder Immobilised
Investigations for a suspected UTI
Urinalysis
Urine culture
When do you admit a patient with a UTI?
Co-morbidity
Sepsis
Abscess
Multi-resistant organism
