What is testicular torsion?
Twisting on the testicle on its spermatic cord within the tunica vaginalis
What are risk factors for testicular torsion?
Young age Previous torsion Bell clapper deformity Cryptorchidism FHx
What is a bell clapper deformity?
Horizontal lie of the testicle due to failure of the tunica vaginalis to fix to the scrotum
What are the symptoms of testicular torsion?
Unilateral pain
N+V
What are the signs of testicular torsion?
Swollen high riding testicle
Absent cremasteric reflex
Negative Prehn’s sign
What is Prehn’s sign?
Pain relieved on lifting the ipsilateral testicle
How is the diagnosis of testicular torsion made?
Clinically
How soon should a testicular torsion be operated on?
Within 6 hours
How is testicular torsion managed?
Bilateral orchidopexy
Why is a bilateral orchidopexy done?
Prevent further episode of torsion
