What is haematuria?
Presence of blood in the urine
How is haematuria classified?
Visible haematuria
- blood is visible in the urine
Symptomatic non-visible haematuria
- microscopic haematuria that presents with associated symptoms
Asymptomatic non-visible haematuria
- microscopic haematuria with no associated symptoms
What is pseudohaematuria?
Red/brown urine that is not caused by blood
Clinical features of haematuria
Degree of haematuria
- pink vs dark red
- clots?
Total haematuria or terminal haematuria

What are the urological referral criteria for haematuria?
Aged >/= 45 with either
- unexplained visible haematuria without UTI
- visible haematuria that persists are successful UTI treatment
Aged 60 with unexplained non-visible haematura and either dysuria or raised WCC

What can cause pseudohaematuria?
Causes
- medication (rifampicin, methyldopa)
- hyperbilirubinuria
- myoglobinuria
- beetroot/rhubarb
