Paraphismosis Flashcards
1
Q
What is paraphismosis?
A
Inability to pull forward a retracted foreskin
2
Q
What is the pathophysiology of paraphismosis?
A
Tight band of foreskin prevents retraction
Glans becomes increasingly oedematous - reduced venous return
3
Q
What are risk factors for paraphismosis?
A
Phismosis
Catheter (unreplaced foreskin)
Poor hygiene
Previous paraphismosis
4
Q
What are the clinical features of paraphismosis?
A
Progressive pain and swelling in glans
Unable to retract foreskin
5
Q
How is paraphismosis managed?
A
Manual decompression
- wraps glans in gauze and squeeze tightly for 5 mins
- draw foreskin back over
Analgesia
