Using Resources Flashcards
Finite
Limited amount
Renewable
Replaced same as used up
Cotton
Used for clothing
Polyester replaces it
Wood
Used for construction material
PVC replaces it
Potable water
Water that is safe for people to drink
Desalination (distillation) advantages
Uses salt water which is in plentiful supply
Large volumes of water can be distilled
Reservoir method
- Source of water
- Reservoir
- Screening mesh this removed large sediment
- Sedimentation
- Passing untreated water through filter beds made of sand and gravel to remove solid particles
- The addition of chlorine or ozone to sterilise the water by killing microorganisms or, without adding chemical sterilising agents by passing ultraviolet light through the water
- Temporary storage of purified water
Advantages of reservoir
Lots of potable water produced
Low set up cost
Disadvantages of reservoir
Relies on the reservoir to be full.
Droughts can affect production
Disadvantages of distillation
Lots of energy require for the process
Advantages of reverse osmosis
Less energy required for the process
Disadvantages of reverse osmosis
Pumps and parts need to be replaced
How to treat sewage
Filtering the large solids
Sedimentation to produce sewage sludge (sinks) and effluent (floats)
Anaerobic digestion of solid sludge
Aerobic biological treatment of liquid effluent using bacteria
Phytomining
Growing plants which contains copper
Plants are burnt to produce ash
The ash is dissolved in sulphuric acid to produce a solution of copper sulphate
The solution undergoes electrolysis to extract the copper
Advantages of phytomining
Uses low grade copper ore
Requires less energy than smelting
Produces less air pollution
Reduces amount of waste rock
