A compound formula is a formula that uses more than one operator to perform calculation.

Why would you want to use a range with an example?
Because using a range can save a lot of time. Eg. if you want to calculate the sum of multiple rows or columns it is always better to use a range.
In the example =SUM(B4:B9), what is SUM?
In =SUM(B4:B9), SUM is a built-in function of Excel that helps in adding numbers.
