What was the Domino theory?
The USA fear that one by one each country in Asia would fall to communism, like a row of Dominoes. China had already fallen.

He sent military advisors.
When Diem refused to hold the elections, what did the USA do?
They supported him.
Why was Diem an unpopular leader?
His Government was corrupt and unfair.
Name some of the things Diem did that made him unpopular.
- He ordered the arrest of many Socialists, Communists and Buddhists. He had a particular hatred for Buddhists.
- He got rid of traditionally elected local council members and had them replaced by Saigon Officials.
- He ordered villagers to build strategic hamlets, separating them from their rice fields and enforcing mandatory labour.
- Diem was very reluctant to let his soldiers kill people, this infuriated America.
- The NLF (National Liberation Front) was set up to oppose Diem, it was supplied by Ho Chi Minh.
- Rigged elections, he made his ballot paper red, associated with good luck, and his opposer’s green, associated with bad fortune.
