Name some of the things Diem did that made him unpopular.

A
  • He ordered the arrest of many Socialists, Communists and Buddhists. He had a particular hatred for Buddhists.
  • He got rid of traditionally elected local council members and had them replaced by Saigon Officials.
  • He ordered villagers to build strategic hamlets, separating them from their rice fields and enforcing mandatory labour.
  • Diem was very reluctant to let his soldiers kill people, this infuriated America.
  • The NLF (National Liberation Front) was set up to oppose Diem, it was supplied by Ho Chi Minh.
  • Rigged elections, he made his ballot paper red, associated with good luck, and his opposer’s green, associated with bad fortune.
