What was the CWA? What did it do?
Civilian Works Administration, November 1933
Temporary work for 4 million people during Roosevelt’s first winter as president. It was a life-saver for many.
What was the NRA? What did it do?
National Recovery Administration, 1933
Improved working conditions in industry by setting out fair wages and establishing workers’ rights to join a Trade Union. Industries were encouraged to set up a fair code of practice, many did. It was declared unlawful in 1935. Wagner Act of 1935 replaced some of what was lost.
What was the HOLC? What did it do?
Homeowners Loan Corporation, 1933
This gave out loans to homeowners with low mortgages. The aim was to re-encourage home ownership and to avoid homeowners having to surrender their homes because they were behind in mortgage payments.
What was the WPA? What did it do?
Works Progress Administration, 1935
This replaced the PWA. It gave work to artists and actors through the construction of Theatres.
What did the Social Security act of 1935 do?
This provided federal aid to the elderly and set up an unemployment insurance scheme.
Pension payments weren’t due to start until 1940, they were very low payments and they only lasted 16 weeks.
Why was the New Deal so shocking to Americans?
After years of having a Government that didn’t interfere with the affairs of the public/businesses, this was a massive shock.
