When were agreements reached in Paris?
1973.
What was agreed at the Paris Peace Conference in 1973?
- US Troops to all leave Vietnam.
- US prisoners of war to be released by NV.
- NV forces could remain in control of areas they already controlled, but the SV Government would continue to exist.
- Elections to be held in the future to determine Vietnam’s future.
When did Saigon fall the communists?
April 1975
Where did the North Vietnamese attack the South Vietnamese from?
They came from Laos, Cambodia and from the North, triple attack.
How did SV troops respond the North’s attack?
They fled further South, to Saigon, stealing SV peasants’ food and vehicles. They threw stones at US cameramen and didn’t aid the citizens, they were ill-trained for the situation.
What happened to major cities in South Vietnam when the North Attack?
They quickly fell.
What happened to the remaining US officials?
They were airlifted out of Vietnam from the roof of the US Embassy in Saigon.
What choice was given to civilians?
Either accept communist rule, or flee the capital, many escaped by boat.
How many Vietnamese had been killed during the Vietnam war?
Nearly 4 million.
How many US troops had been killed during the Vietnam war? How many injured?
57,000 died. 300,000 permanently injured.
Why was the North’s attack on the South particularly strong?
They were aided by Russia, Soviet Tanks. They’d had years to recover from the Tet Offensive.
