What was FERA? What did it do?
Federal Emergency Relief Administration.
It provided $500 million dollars to help relieve suffering of the of the poor (food, clothing, etc), equipment for farmers.
What was the CCC? What did it do?
Civilian Conservation Corps
It provided short-term (6 months) work for men aged 18-25.
THE PAY WAS SHIT.
Most men had to send this money to their parents/wives back home.
300,000 joined in 1933. By 1940, there were 2 million.
What was the PWA? What did it do?
Publics Work Administration
It paid for public work projects such as roads, hospitals . Used unemployed workers, created jobs.
What was the AAA? What did it do?
Agricultural Adjustment Administration.
It provided farmers with advice on marketing and farming techniques. The Government also bought some produce from farmers to help solve the overproduction problem.
Wealthy farmers benefitted the most.
What was the NIRA? What did it do?
National Industrial Recovery Act.
It set standards on working practices (hours, child labour).
It helped create more jobs. Employers involved in the scheme had the Eagle symbol of government approval. The Government encouraged people to use these firms.
Over 2 million employers joined the scheme.
What was the TVA? What did it do?
The Tennessee Valley Authority.
Huge public works project; dams, canals, irrigation and water transport. Hydroelectric power created thousands of jobs. Work across 6 states in America. New housing built.
Relief. What did it mean?
Relief - relieving extreme poverty/emergency, feeding the starving and providing shelter for the homeless.
Recovery. What did it mean?
Recovery - reviving the economy by getting industry going and people working.
Reform. What did it mean?
Reform - increasing the responsibilities of the government by helping those in need in society (elderly, sick, disabled).
