A

- Favored limited central government and was the chief drafter of the Declaration of Independence
- Jefferson approved of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and promoted ideals of republicanism

The Louisiana Purchase (1803)
A
A territorial purchase that encompassed 530,000,000 acres of territory in North America that the United States purchased from France in 1803 for $15 million

A
- Jefferson sent William Clark and Merriweather Lewis to explore the territory purchased from France
- Allowed the United States to become more familiarized with the weather, climate, wildlife, and Native Americans that lived in the territory

A
A landmark Supreme Court that established the principle of judicial review, allowing the Supreme Court to determine the constitutionality of acts from the legislative and executive branches

Barbary pirates
A
- The name given to several renegade countries on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa who demanded tribute in exchange for refraining from attacking ships in the Mediterranean
- From 1795-1801, the U.S. paid the Barbary states for protection against the pirates

Tripolitan War / Barbary War

- 1801-1805
- A series of naval engagements launched by President Jefferson in an effort to stop the attacks on American merchant ships by the Barbary pirates
- The war was inconclusive, and afterwards, the U.S. paid a tribute to the Barbary states to protect their ships from pirate attacks

Embargo Act (1807)
A
- A law that prohibited American merchant ships from sailing to foreign ports that was used as an alternative to war with Britain
- However, this act backfired, as it brought more economic hardship to the United States than to Britain
