URR Arterial Flow Characteristics Flashcards
what is laminar flow?
-concentric layers of flow each with different velocities
-center layers have highest velocity
-outer layers of flow are slower
what is plug flow or blunt flow?
-all layers of flow moving at same speed
-also seen at arterial branch origins and prox to stenosis
what is systole?
cardiac contraction pushes blood forward through the arterial system
what is diastole?
heart relaxes, refills with deoxygenated blood
what is pulsatility?
continuous throbbing or beating
what is thrill?
abnormal blood flow in vessel (vibration)
resistance will what prox to stenosis?
increase
resistance and velocity will what distal to stenosis?
decrease
what is spectral broadening?
widening of the spectral waveform with filling in of the spectral window
what is bandwidth?
difference between the highest and lowest frequencies in the pulse
what kind of flow has a narrow bandwidth?
laminar due to cells moving at same speed
what kind of flow has a wide bandwidth?
turbulent due to different velocities
what is acceleration time?
-time from onset of systole to point of max systolic pressure
-measured to differentiate inflow from outflow disease in lower extrems
acceleration time is what distal to stenosis?
increased du to decreased resistance
what is the pulsatility index?
-degree of resistance in vessel
-measures the variability in blood velocity
-used to distinguish inflow from outflow disease
-higher in extrems than organs
