Urogenital System Development Flashcards
What are the 3 regions of the developing urinary system and what order do they arise?
- Pronephros
- Mesonephros
- Metanephros
What important structures are in the mesonephros? What do they become?
Mesonephric duct. Becomes Wolffian duct in males, regresses in females.
What structure is important in the Metanephros? What do they become?
- Uteric bud: Becomes collecting duct.
2. Metanephric blastema: Cells surrounding metanephric duct.
What happens during horseshoe kidney? Duplex ureter and kidney?
Horseshoe= Fusion of metanephric blastema
Duplex=Extra ureter or kidney.
What is oligohydromnios?
Too little amniotic fluid because kidneys are absent.
What is Urachal Fistula?
Persisent opening between the urinary bladder and umbilical cord.
What does the Paramesonehpric duct form?
Mullerian duct in females, which regresses in Males.
What are the different parts of the indifferent external genitalia?
- Genital eminence
- Genital Tubercle
- Genital Folds
- Urogenital sinus
- Genital swellings.
What do each of the external genital parts become in males?
- Tubercle=Penis
- Swellings=Scrotum
- Folds=Fuse/close urogenital sinus.
- Canalization of epithelial seam=urethra.
What do each of the external genital parts become in females?
- Tubercle=Clitoris
- Folds=Labia minora
- Swellings= Labia majora
- Urogenital sinus=Urethra
What are the 3 functions of the urinary system?
- Excretion
- Elimination
- Homeostatic regulation
What are some of the homeostatic functions of urinary system?
- Regulates blood volume/pressure.
- Regulates plasma ion concentrations.
- Helps stabilize blood pH
- Conserves valuable nutrients.
- Assists liver in detoxifying
What are some characteristics of the kidney?
- Left is superior to right.
- Superior surface capped by adrenal glands.
- Receives about 20-25% of cardiac output.
What are the 3 layers of CT of the kidney?
- Fibrous capsule=layer of collegen fibers
- Perinephric fat capsule
- Renal fascia
What kind of epithelium does the renal corpuscle have? Convoluted tubules?
Corpuscle=Simple sqaumous
Tubules=Simple cuboidal.
