Liver Patho Flashcards
What is hepatitis? What can cause it?
Imflammation of hepatocytes.
- picornavirus
- Hepadnavirus
- Flavivirus
- Defective virus
- Herpevirus
What occurs during acute hepatitis?
Apoptosis of cells.
Commonly caused by NSAID use.
What occurs during chronic hepatitis?
Get ground glass hepatocytes.
What is Steatosis?
Fatty liver
What do hepatitis and fatter liver disease lead to?
- Cirrhosis
- Portal hypertention
- Jaundice
what is Cirrhosis?
Irreversible inflammatory disease with decreased heptatic function due to fibrosis.
What are some consequences of portal hypertention?
- Hepatic encephalopathy
- Varices
- Splenomegaly
- Ascites
What is hepatic encephalophathy?
Impaired cognitive function, tremors and EEG changes due to neurotoxin circulation from liver dysfunction.
What is Ascites?
Increased hepatic vessel hydrostatic pressure and decreased oncotic pressure lead to large bloated stomach.
What is Cholestasis? What can this lead to?
Bile cant flow from liver to gut. Get too much cholesterol buildup and can lead to xanthomas.
What is Hemochromatosis?
Autosomal recessive disease that increased body iron. Leads to Cirrhosis, skin pigmentation and liver carcinomas.
What is wilsons disease?
Autosomal recessive disease that increased body copper. Results in liver disease neurological disruptions , and Kayser-Fleischer rings in cornea.
What can cause Hepatocellular carcinoma?
Hep B and C
Aflotoxin exposure.
What is Varices?
Distended veins in lower esophagus, stomach, rectum. Esophageal bleeding most common.
How is bilirubin eliminated?
- Biliruben+Albumin
- Conjugated by Glucuronyl transferase
