GI A & P Flashcards
What are the 3 glands, percentage of saliva they secrete, location, and what they secrete?
- Parotid: Largest, 25% of saliva, near the ear, secretes serous solution.
- Submandibular: 70%, located under mandible, serous and mucous secretion.
- Sublingual, 5%, under tongue, Serous and mucous.
The esophagus enters stomach through what? What muscles are involved?
Esophageal hiatus.
Voluntary muscle first 1/3, smooth lower 2/3.
What does deglutition? What are the 3 phases?
Swallowing.
- Buccal: compression of food agaisnt palate, sealing off of nasopharynx.
- Pharyngeal: Food passes glottis.
- Esophageal: Contraction of pharyngeal muscles, food pushed to stomach.
What are the major regions
- Cardiac
- Fundus
- Body
- Antrum
- Pylorus
What are the 2 stomach sphincters?
- Gastroesophageal
2. Pyloric sphincter
What lines the stomach?
Simple Columnar Epithelium.
What do mucous neck cells, parietal cells, chief cells, enteroendocrine cells, secrete?
- Mucous: mucus
- Parietal: hydrochloric acid.
- Chief: Pepsinogen
- Enteroendocrine: Serotonin, gastrin.
What are the phases of stomach digestion?
- Cephalic: Taste of food
- Gastric: Food in stomach
- Intestinal: Small amounts of food enters intestine.
Which intestine absorbs the most nutrients? What are the 3 segements?
Small intestine.
- Duodenum (10’)
- Jejunum (8’)
- Ileum (12’)
What is peristalsis?
Propulsion of food through smooth muscle contraction.
What is segmentation?
Local contractions of smooth muscle that breaks up and mixes the food.
What are some intestine modifications for absorption?
- Circular folds for increases surface area
- Villi: can move
- Microvilli: contain enzymes
What are crypts of lieberkuhn?
Intestinal glands where mucous cells between columnar epi cells secreting mucins.
Digestion enzymes are attached where on intestinal cells? What are the enzymes?
Attached to brush border.
Sucrase lactase Glucoamylase Alpha Dextrinase Peptidases
What do duodenum brunners glands secrete?
Alkaline mucins when chyme arrives from stomach
