Which bacteria often causes UTIs?
E coli
What does K antigen do?
Permits productioin of polysaccharide capsule -> harder for WBCs to ingest
What is the gram stain for E coli?
Gram negative rods
What are some symptoms of a lower UTI?
Dysuria, frequency, urgency, sometimes low grade fever
What are some symptoms of an upper UTI?
Fever, loin pain, dysuria, frequency, urgency
What are the relevant findings on a dipstick for a UTI?
Leucocyte esterase, nitrite, haematuria, proteinuria
What is the antibiotic treatment for an uncomplicated UTI?
Trimethoprim
What is the 1st line antibiotic for pyelonephritis?
Co-amoxiclav
How is TB of urinary tract spread?
Haematogenous
Where does TB of urinary tract start?
Kidneys - can eventually cause calcification of kidneys
Occasionally spreads to ureters and bladder
How can TB of the urinary tract present?
Sterile pyuria, haematuria
What can shistosomiasis cause in the urinary tract?
Chronic cystitis, calcification of the bladder, fibrosis and stenosis of VUJ, bladder cancer
What systemic infections can cause GN?
Post infectious glomerulonephritis
Endocarditis
Hepatitis
HIV
What organism usually causes post infectious GN?
Group A strep (1-4 weeks after throat infection)
