Urinary System: CHP 13 Flashcards
What is the function of the kidney?
Blood filtering
Filters water and reclaims what body needs
Excretes rest as urine
What is the function of the ureter?
Channel for urine flow from kidney to urinary bladder
What is the function of the urinary bladder?
Stretchable urine storage organ
What is the function of the urethra?
Urine flow channel between urinary bladder and body surface
Describe glomerular filtration in the nephron.
Water, salts, nutrients, and waste molecules move inside glomerulus to glomerular capsule.
Describe tubular reabsorption in the nephron.
Nutrient/salt molecules are actively reabsorbed from convoluted tubules into peritubular capillary network, and water flows passively.
Describe tubular secretion in the nephron.
Molecules are actively secreted from peritubular capillary network into convoluted tubules.
Describe the first three steps of the process of micturition.
Urine accumulates, bladder stretches, relflex is sent to begin urination
Stretch receptors send nerve impulses to spinal cord
PS nerve activity causes contraction of detrusor muscle and relaxation of internal urethral sphincter
Describe the last three steps of micturition.
Spinal cord inhibits motor neurons and causes external urethral sphincter to relax
Urination occurs
Nerve impulses can voluntarily contract external urinary sphincter, delaying passage of urine through urethra
What enzyme is secreted to balance blood pressure?
Renin
How is blood volume regulated?
Returning water to the blood and eliminating water through urine
How is blood pH regulated?
Through blood ion levels
(Hydrogen ions and bicarbonate ions)
