Q

List the steps involved for quiet breathing.

A

Signal from CNS thru phrenic and external intercostal nerves reaches diaphragm and external intercostal muscles. Volume increases in thoracic cavity as pressure decreases. The air moves from high pressure area to low pressure area. O2 is exchanged for CO2 in alveoli. The signals from the CNS stop and breathing muscles relax. Volume decreases, pressure increases and air moves from alveoli to the atmosphere with CO2.

Q

Describe the controls over breathing.

A

The respiratory center in the brain stem’s medulla is the pacemaker for respiration. It sends signals over nerve pathways for breathing muscles to contract. Carbon dioxide is the main trigger that controls breathing rate and depth.
