- found on each side of the vertebral column
- right kidney is lower than left because of the liver

-controls blood by blood ion composition (na, cl, ca, etc)
controls blood pH regulation of H and HCO

Renal blood supply
A
one forth of systemic cardiac output flows through the kidneys each minute
arterial flow into and venous flow out of the kidneys
