Urinary Elimination Flashcards
What is the normal amount of urine for adults within 24 hours?
1200-1500 mL
What is the normal pH level of urine?
4.5-8
What is the normal specific gravity of urine?
1.010-1.025
The production of abnormal large amounts of urine
Polyuria
The low urine output usually less than 500 ml/day or greater than 30 ml/hr for an adult
Oliguria
It refers to lack of urine production (<100ml/day)
Anuria
Voiding two or more times at night
Nocturia
Voiding that is either painful or difficult
Dysuria
Delay and difficulty in initiating voiding
Urinary hesitancy
Involuntary urination
Urinary incontinence
Involuntary urination in children beyond 4-5 years old
Enuresis
Leakage of less than 50 ml of urine as a result of sudden increase in intraabdominal pressure
Stress incontinence
Continuous and unpredictable loss of urine
Total incontinence
Involuntary loss of urine occurring at somewhat predictable intervals when specific bladder volume is reached
Reflex incontinence
Involuntary unpredictable passage of urine
Functional incontinence
Accumulate of urine in the bladder with the associated inability of the bladder to empty itself
Retention
Introduction of the catheter into the urinary bladder
Urinary Catheterization
It is a single-lumen tube with a small eye or opening from the insertion tip. This is used for a short term and for men with prostatic hypertrophy because it is less traumatic on insertion.
Straight Catheter
It is a double lumen catheter. The larger lumen drains the urine from the bladder and the smaller lumen is used to inflate the balloon to hold the catheter in place within the bladder and used for the long term.
Two-way Foley catheter (retention)
The catheter that is used for clients who require continuous or intermittent bladder irrigation, which has a third lumen through which sterile irrigating fluid can flow into the bladder.
Three-way Foley catheter
What is the purpose of Urinary catheterization?
- To relieve bladder distension
- To instill medication into the bladder
- To irrigate the bladder
- To measure the urine output accurately
- To collect sterile urine specimen
- To measure residual urine. Residual urine is the amount of urine retained in the bladder after forceful voiding
- To maintain continence to incontinent patients
- To promote healing of the genito-urinary structures postoperatively
- To empty the bladder in preparation for diagnostic procedures and surgery
True or False:
It is important to perform perineal care before the procedure of urinary catheter administration

The normal length of catheter insertion is:
• Male: 6-9 inches
• Female: 3-4 inches

If the purpose of catheterization is to relieve bladder distension, practice gradual decompression to prevent shock. Only 750-1000ml of urine is to be drained at a time.
