Nursing consideration after the removal of indwelling catheter.
Client should boid 4-6h after catheter removal.
Principles of urinary catheter
Sterile technique is a must!
Increased fluid intake to prevent urinary stasis (3L/day)
Food that can offer to acidify the urine.
Cranberries Prunes Plums Egg Meat Whole grains.
Type of catheter that is used for long period of time. Usually have 2 lumens, small lumen for the balloon and big lumen for the passage of the urine.
Indwelling urethral catheter (retention cath., foley cath.
Type of catheter tha is used for short oeriod of time. Single lumen with 1/2 inch opening from the insertion from the tip of the tube.
Straight catheter
Type of catheter , small insertion that is made just above the pubic area and the tube is directly inserted to the bladder.
Suprapubic catheter
Urinary catheter position: male, female
M: supine/ flaccid penis90* angle
F: dorsal recumbent
Urinary catheter length: male, female
M: 40 cm cath
F: 22 cm cath
LOI:
M: 6-9 in
F: 3-4 in
Place to secure the end part if the tube of the Urinary catheter:male, female.
M: lower abdomen (to prevent penoscrotal tension)
F: inner thigh
