Blood components in BT.
1. Whole blood A. RBC- O2 carrying capacity B. plasma- fluid volume regulation 2. Packed RBC ( malaria) 3. Fresh frozen palsma (dehydration) 4. Platelate (coagulation) 5. Albumin
Done to replace blood components through IV.
Blood transfussion
Nursing action before BT, if the patient has increased temperature.
Withold the procedure.
Nursing considerationin BT.
Check:
- expiration fate
- name of the pt
- cardiopulmonary clearance
- serial and hospital number
Dont leave the patient for the1st 30 mins.
Reaction of BT is expected within 15 minutes.
Gauge of the needle in BT

Drop factor during BT inthe 1st 30 mins.
10gtts/min
Nursing action in BT whenreaction accur.
Stop and reffer
Nursing action in BT, if circulatory overload happened.
Slow down
Notify physician
Monitor VS
Medication administration for BT.
Deforoxamine (DESFERAL)
Drop rate in BT.
KVO rate at NSS
Maximum time of transfussionin BT ( whple blood, packed RBC)
4hours
Maximum time of transffusion in BT (platelet, albumin, plasma)
20-30mins
Common reactions to BT
Hemolytic - backpain
Pyrogenic- headache and fever
Anaphylactic- hives and rashes (benadryl)
Cardiogenic- dyspnea- fowler’s position
Priority in BT
Cross matching of the blood
Antodote for deforoxamine (desferal)
Fe (iron)
