What are the manefestations for the need for suctioning.
D yspnea, pallor and cyanosis
D rooling, vomitus in mouth andbubbling breath sounds
D ecreased O2 saturation (check the ABG)
D ecreased breath sound
Remeber: 4D’s
It is performed to clear the airways. Itshould be painless and relieve respiratory distress. It is normal to cause coughing , sneezing, and, gagging.
Suctioning
Position during suctioning: oro, naso, trachea/endo.
O: semi-fowler’s with the neck at the side. Unconcious: side lying
N: semi-fowler’s with the neck hyoperextended.
T/E: semi-fowler’s unless contraindicated.
Pressure of suctioning: oro, naso, trachea/endo.
O/N: 110-150 mmHg
T/E: 90-110 mmHg
Length if the tube to be inserted in suctioning: oro, naso, trachea/endo.
O/N: 3-5 inches ( or from the client’s earlobe to the tip of the nose)
T/E: 2-3 inches
Lubricant used in suctioning: oro, naso, trachea/endo
O: water
N: water- soluble solution
T/E: saline solution
Duration of suctioning: oro, naso, trachea/endo.
O/N: 5-15 seconds
T/E: 5-10 seconds
Resting time berween suctioning: oro, naso, trachea/endo.
O/N: 20-30 seconds
T/E: 3-5 minutes
O2delivery before and after suctioning: oro, naso, trachea/endo.
O/N: face mask
T/E: ambubag
What are the corresponding pressure of the portable suction apparatus: infant, child, adult.
I: 3-5 mmHg
C: 5-10 mmHg
A: 10-15 mmHg
Corresponding pressure in wall suction apparatus: infant, child, adult.
I: 50-95 mmHg
C: 95-110 mmHg
A: 100-120 mmHg
