URI terms to know Flashcards
Ageusia
the loss of taste functions of the tongue
Anosmia
a loss of the sense of smell
Asthma
a respiratory condition marked by spasms in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing; it usually presents with symptoms like cough, dyspnea, and wheezing
Croup
refers to an infection of the upper airway,
obstructs breathing and causes a characteristic “barking” cough; other symptoms include fever, rhinitis, stridor, and dyspnea.
Dysgeusia
(also known as parageusia) a distortion of the sense of taste; a bad taste in the mouth
Dysphagia
difficulty swallowing
Dyspnea
shortness of breath
Epiglottis
he flap at the base of the tongue that prevents food entering the trachea (windpipe)
Epiglottitis
inflammation of the epiglottis that may cause respiratory obstruction, especially in children.
A sore throat + dysphagia = suspicion of epiglottitis and subsequent referral
Hypoxemia
low level of oxygen in the blood
influenza
aka flu; resp infection caused by influenca virus
Mucopurulent
composed of or containing both mucus and pus
Odynophagia
pain upon swallowing
Pertussis
(also known as whooping cough)
a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by a type of bacteria called Bordetella pertussis.
The initial catarrhal phase (characterized by rhinorrhea, mild cough, sneezing) is 1-2 weeks, followed by 1-6 weeks of paroxysmal coughing
Pharyngitis
inflammation of the pharynx, resulting in a sore throat; pharyngitis is a symptom, rather than a condition
Rhinitis
inflammation of the nasal mucosa
Sinusitis
inflammation of the nasal cavity
commonly manifesting as tenderness over the sinuses +/- facial pain that is aggravated by Valsalva’s maneuver or postural changes, fever >101.5F (38.6C), tooth pain, halitosis, upper respiratory tract symptoms for >7 days with poor response to decongestants
Stridor
a single pitch, inspiratory sound that is produced by large airways with severe narrowing
it may be caused by severe obstruction of any proximal airway.
Breathing that sounds abnormal and high-pitched. Stridor is often associated with croup, respiratory infection & airway obstruction
Wheezing
a musical sound produced primarily during expiration by airways of any size
