A

What is the history of Notting Hill?

A

Built in 19th century, after WW2 spacious houses were divided into rentals for poor tenants (large number of migrants from commonwealth eg. West Indies), rich landlord Rachman owned lots of properties + used vio,ende to evict tenants so he could abuse immigrants with no money and nowhere to go in 1958, home to Notting Hill carnival

When did gentrification begin in Notting Hill?

A

1970s, by younger public sector professionals (teachers and social workers), they purchased ran down properties in deprived inner city areas and converted them back into large Victorian mansions, now owners are selling properties for up to 40 times the buying price
