What was St Ives like before suburbanisation?

A

In 1961 had population do around 4000 (in 2010 it was 16,000/4 times more), many commuted ro London or Cambridge for work, 100 year old housing (taken over by housing developments now), primary jobs eg. Farming (majority of the population is wealthy middle class), rural bus service (in decline as most own 2 cars), village shops, pubs and hall (decline as residents travel to supermarkets), small tight knit community (not anymore), used to be quiet and pollution free(not anymore)

How is St Ives managing the problems?

A

£116 million guided busway to reduce congestion, of 200 planned new homes 75 are affordable and aimed at lower incomes, New school being planned for 240 new placements, New embankment and flood walls to protect against flooding from the River Ouse
