Where is the Cheonggyecheon river?
River that runs through South Korea’s Capital, Seoul, beside the CBD district, stretches 6km long
How big is Seoul?
Population of 26 million (greater Seoul area), 10,400 people per Km squared, urban growth and urban sprawl
What where problems with air quality in the 1980s?
Levels of sulphur dioxide from traffic and suspended particulate matter exceeded the recommended safe level by WHO (world health organisation) by more than a factor of two, 1988 when Seoul hosted Olympic Games special measures had to be used to reduce traffic during games (if last number of car registration/license plate coincided with the day they weren’t allowed to drive)
What legislations has South Korea implemented to improve air quality?
1990, Koreas first national policy addressing air quality (effort to encourage use of public transport), 2002, Seoul metropolitan air quality improvement promotion programme organisation was launched: improvements to fuel quality, encouraging low-emission vehicles, disposal of older vehicles, compressed natural gas (CNG) busses increased from 74 in 2001 to about 23,000 in 2010
When was the Cheonggyecheon river project started?
Started in 2003 after plans announced in 2002
Why was restoration needed?
Concrete cancer, concrete in motorways was touring due to the river below, pollution was high in the CBD of Seoul, its food for sustainability and the road inhabited 100,000 small businesses
What was done in Seoul?
$281 million spent on removing the road and restoring river, 22 bridges implemented (12 are pedestrian bridges, increasing walkability in city and discouraging car use to reduce co2 emisiones), public transport implemented, negative of increased traffic congestion by 12% during restoration, river has cultural significance, provides green space in centre of Seoul, drew over 18 million tourists, bus and subway use increased
