Where is Sheffield?
It is a city in the north of England, in the county of South Yorkshire
What is deindustrialisation?
It is the loss or reduction of manufacturing and associated jobs in the inner city (moved elsewhere)
What is decentralisation?
The movement of services and people to the outskirts of cities or towns (urban areas)
What have been the impacts of deindustrialisation in Sheffield?
National economy in deep trouble in the 1970s due to ir being cheaper to manufacture abroad (eg. Tata group in India), Margaret Thatcher privatised 2 industries that were driving Sheffield in the 1970s, unemployment rose from 4% to 11% between 1978 and 1981 (behind national rates), lost 50,000 steel jobs

Advanced Manufacturing Park
Where is the AMP and when was it built?
The AMP is located in Rotherham, on the city outskirts/boundary of Sheffield, off of junction 33 off of the M1 motorway, it was built in 2010 costing £25 million to build
What is the impacts of the AMP?
Directly employs 499 advanced manufacturing jobs (high skilled worker are attracted), overall 2000 people work there, Sheffield is recognised as one of the worlds strongest manufacturing brands, located near Sheffield Univeristy (so more skilled workers and better technology), big companies/TNC’s eg. Boeing (employs 700-800 people) which produced parts of the new Dreamliner and F1 cars here, it’s location close to the M1 makes it easily accessible, only negative is draws away skilled and higher educated workers from Sheffield’s centre
What are the ongoing issues for Sheffield?
Many who lost there jobs suffer long term unemployment, many of the service jobs created are part time or 0 hour, number of new service jobs is less than the number of jobs lost in manufacturing, inner city decline deters investment, 900 hectares of brownfield sites, Sheffield is the 57th. Key deprived local authority in England, unemployment is still higher than UK average

Any land that’s has been previously built on (disused/derelict/abandoned buildings, factories, etc)
