Q

Why was regeneration done at the London dock lands?

A

Loss of docks due to deindustrialisation (loss of jobs in shipping industry), in 1950s 602 poor tower blocks built (to replace homes damaged by bombs in WW2) now used as state housing (high levels of crime and deprivation), boats are too large to fit in the river (docks moved downstream where they could fit), 1970-80 30,000 jobs lost, 1981 50% of dock lands were derelict, unemployment rates at 21% (males at 24%, twice the national average), inadequate transport links (not easily accessed and lack of investment)
