how is BedZED sustainable?
transport - they use cycles and are near public transport. have bike storage units. example - orchard avenue - 2 minutes away
food - everyone has a garden to grow their own fruits and veg and therefore uses less landfill so there’ll be less methane and so less climate change. have compost bins for food waste and for their gardens
waste - have separate recycling bins at home
water - have dual flush toilets. have showers instead of having baths. have low flow taps to reduce water waste levels by 50%

next to bradford in the county of west Yorkshire in the north of england
how is leeds connected to other cities
you can use the M1 and M62 to get there. there’s also the leeds bradford airport and it takes 2 hours by train.

jobs - jobs in the HQ of asda or in the HQ of channel 4 or in banking, law or tech/digital
quality of a good life - for shopping they have the queens arcade. for music venues they have corn exchange. they also have art galleries
how did leeds develop
saxon era - it started out as a saxon village where everyone were probably farmers.
medieval era - roads built for trading. most people trade things like metals, textiles and pottery, woven and dyed clothing
1643 - grows along the river Aire for boat travel to the sea. people traded dyed wool for food so people farmed sheep. and there was an English civil war.
1816 - leeds-liverpool canal was completed for trading resources with other countries
1858 - town hall was built and it was huge and impressive which mean leeds was wealthy
what is the ethnicity of leeds like
85% of people are white, 7.7% are asian, 2.7%are mixed race, 3.5% are black.
Caribbean people arrived in the 1950’s to get labouring and manufacturing jobs.
Irish folks came in the early 19th century and mid 20th century to get labouring and manufacturing jobs.
polish/ Ukrainian/ Hungarian people came after WW2 as refugees and they lived in the inner city.
polish/ Lithuanian people came in 2004 due to the extension of the EU and they lived in the inner city
indian and pakistani folks came in in the 1950’s for labouring and manufacturing jobs
