transport - they use cycles and are near public transport. have bike storage units. example - orchard avenue - 2 minutes away
food - everyone has a garden to grow their own fruits and veg and therefore uses less landfill so there’ll be less methane and so less climate change. have compost bins for food waste and for their gardens
waste - have separate recycling bins at home
water - have dual flush toilets. have showers instead of having baths. have low flow taps to reduce water waste levels by 50%

how did leeds develop

A

saxon era - it started out as a saxon village where everyone were probably farmers.
medieval era - roads built for trading. most people trade things like metals, textiles and pottery, woven and dyed clothing
1643 - grows along the river Aire for boat travel to the sea. people traded dyed wool for food so people farmed sheep. and there was an English civil war.
1816 - leeds-liverpool canal was completed for trading resources with other countries
1858 - town hall was built and it was huge and impressive which mean leeds was wealthy

A

85% of people are white, 7.7% are asian, 2.7%are mixed race, 3.5% are black.

Caribbean people arrived in the 1950’s to get labouring and manufacturing jobs.
Irish folks came in the early 19th century and mid 20th century to get labouring and manufacturing jobs.
polish/ Ukrainian/ Hungarian people came after WW2 as refugees and they lived in the inner city.
polish/ Lithuanian people came in 2004 due to the extension of the EU and they lived in the inner city

social - social division in leeds between the wealthy and the poorer residents, unemployment amongst younger people, transportation takes a while, 38% of children live in poverty
economic - theres fuel poverty, housing is too expensive, 15% are on benefit in poorer areas
environmental - bad quality waters in the cities rivers such as the river Aire, bad quality of air

A

rent and property prices go up - locals will start to leave as it’ll become too expensive.
high levels of crime and antisocial behaviour - people will feel unsafe and give a poor reputation to the area which’ll make people and businesses move away. antisocial behaviour may lead to damage to property
poor quality transport - higher bus fares, buses start late and finish early. buses don’t come regulary so people have to use cars —> air pollution
gridlock sunday - heavy traffic –> delay + air pollution

its a megacity and a world city and is the fastest growing city in Europe. theres around 2,000 people per km squared. was the capital for the roman, ottoman and byzantine empire. has thriving industrial districts and has a large port for trade between asia, africa and europe.

A

housing quality - poor residents so cant afford proper houses. residents can’t find a job. solved by building better houses.
traffic congestion - aren’t enough roads connecting main parts of the areas, solved by building more road or have better public transport. deforestation needs to happen for the space
earthquakes - lies at the boundary of 4 tectonic plates. solved by making houses earthquake proof and giving evacuation training and drills
