what is ethiopias economy like
it is based off of trade as ethiopia has a lack of natural resources which makes it a trade deficit of -$5.8 billion and so most trade is done from primary sector stuff so it cant be sold for much
how has the economy developed through influences from the country itself
- physical - erratic rainfall, droughts has caused land to be overfarmed leading to deserticification
- economic - agriculture makes most of the economy, climate change can disrupt farming, economy is growing and secondary and tertiary sectors
- social - every death there is 1.4 babies born - future food shaortages
- political - political wars caused many to migrate and be killed but republic government since 1991 is stable
how far is ethiopia along rostows model
it is at the 2nd stage (pre take-off) cause of investments from TNCs in the secondary industry
and better tech is allowing it to move closer to the 3rd stage
how far has the MDGs been achieved by ethiopia
- primary education, child mortality and healthcare is being wokred on but the rest arent
how has ethiopias international trade influenced its development
- it has a trade defecit which is bad
- its secondary secotr is relied on investments from TNCs
- increased employment in secondary sector
- TNCs sometimes pay low wages and poor working conditions
what are the pros and cons of aid and debt relief
- 5 mil people recieve food from charities
- wealthy countries are encouraged to reduce their debts
- less debt means more investement for development

- the milk is turned into cheese or sold just like that which increases health of workforce
- social heirachy of women increases
- it can take a very long time to take effect
what are teh pros and cons of the grand renaissance dam
- it will take around 4 more years to complete
- produce more than enough electricity for the whole of ethiopia
- electricity can be sold for money which increases the economy
- development can increase
- dam controls the flow of the nile
- conflict could arise between egypt and ethiopia and sudan. this is bad as ethiopia is landlocked so trade comes through sudan and egypt
