Q

what are the evidences for climate change

A
  • ice sheets are dug out of the ice and analysed for CO2 trapped in the ice which shows the levels of CO2 then
  • ocean sediments are dug up and O2 trapped in the sediments can help to calculate the temp then
  • historical records like pictures show the climate f earth back then
  • sea level rising at rapid rates as ice sheets melt due to warmer temperatures
  • ice sheets shrinking

Q

what are some natural causes of climate change and explain how it works

A
  • volcanic eruptions - produce ash, sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide which go into the air which blocks sunlight from reaching the earth and so cools it. (I double checked this and it is correct)
  • ocean currents (el nino and la nina) distribute heat around the earth.
  • MIlankovitch cycles - earths orbit around the sun changes from being circular to more elliptical which can change how much sunlight reaches the earth
  • solar activity - sunspots are dark areas on the sun which emit more sunlight than areas with no sunspot

Q

what are some human causes of climate change

A
  • deforestation - burning trees releases the CO2 stored in the trees + fewer trees
  • agriculture - rice fields have increased which increases the methane levels in the atmosphere
  • fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas have been burnt which increases the CO2 levels in the atmosphere

Q

what is the enhanced greenhouse gas effect

A

CO2 in the air traps infra red radiation from the sun high up in the atmosphere causing increased temperatures

what are the environmental impacts of climate change worldwide

A
  • freshwater sources could become polluted with sea water
  • damage to coral reefs by storms
  • salt marshes could be destroyed by storms which act as a natural barrier to coastal erosion
