Adenovirus Influenza A and B Parainfluenza I and III RSV Rhinovirus
What are some common bacterial infective agents in URTIs?
Haemophilus influenzae Moraxella catarrhalis Mycoplasma S aureus Streptococci - B haemolytic Strep pyogenes - Non haemolytic strep pneumoniae
What type of infection would you suspect if the child is feeling well?
Viral
What type of infection would you suspect if the child is feeling ill?
Bacterial
Describe rhinitis
Runny nose that lasts for 2 weeks, very common especially in winter months, self limiting (just lots of fluids)
Describe otitis media
Inflammation of the medial ear, bright red on inspection, self limiting though can lead to rupture of the drum. Pain in ears for 8 days
Should you treat otitis media with antibiotics or monitor?
Depends on severity (and choice)
Drugs can cause diarrhoea and nappy rash
Drugs only stop pain at day 2, when the pain usually subsides normally. Give analgesics
Why should you take care when prescribing amoxycillin?
Penicillin allergies
If they have EBV they will develop rash
How long do those with laryngitis or tonsillitis feel sore throats for?
7 days
What feature is found in both croup and epiglottis?
Stridor
How long does croup last for?
2-3 days
