What causes an upper respiratory tract infection?
Usually a virus but can also be caused by bacteria
What are some viruses that cause upper respiratory tract infections?
Rhinovirus
What are some bacteria that cause upper respiratory tract infections?
Group B strep or diphtheria (rare)
What is the general presentation of an upper respiratory tract infection?
Runny nose, nasal congestion, dry/painful throat, post nasal drip with no signs of systemic upset and a clear chest
What is the general management of an upper respiratory tract infection?
Supportive - no antibiotic should be given
What can an upper respiratory tract infection progress to, particularly in children?
Bronchiolitis, Epiglottitis or Croup (laryngotracheabronchitis)
What can an upper respiratory tract infection progress to in all ages?
Acute Bronchitis
