What is Bronchiectasis?
Bronchiectasis is when there is dilation of airways due to chronic inflammation and infection
What are the main causes of Bronchiectasis?
- Idiopathic
- Malignancy
- Post infection
- Immunodeficiency
- Genetic: Cystic fibrosis
- Autoimmune: rheumatoid, UC
What is the general presentation of bronchiectasis?
Persistant cough, copious amounts of sputum and intermittent haemoptysis
What investigations can be used to confirm a diagnosis of COPD?
Spirometry, sputum culture and CT
What spirometry results would be indicative of Bronchiectasis?
Obstructive
What CT results would be indicative of Bronchiectasis?
Signet ring sign due to bronchioles being wider than neighbours
What is the general management of bronchiectasis?
Postural drainage, inhalers (e.g. salbutamol), nebulized saline and long term antibiotics
