What does the upper respiratory tract consist of?

Where is the upper respiratory tract located?
Head and neck.
Is the larynx considered as part of the URT by everyone?
No- it is sometimes considered as part of the lower.
What is the larynx?
A set of cartilages, membranes and ligaments which produce sound from expired air and protect the inlet to the respiratory system.
What does the larynx do?
Produces sound from expired air and protects the inlet to the respiratory system.
What does the larynx protect?
Protects the thoracic inlet to the respiratory system.
What bone is the larynx attached to superiorly?
Hyoid bone.
What is the larynx continuous with inferiorly?
The trachea at C6.
Where does the larynx meet the trachea?
C6.
What is the larynx supplied by?
Almost entirely supplied by branches of the vagus nerve for both motor and sensory innervation.
What is the larynx related to anteriorly?
Pharynx (throat).
What is the laryngeal prominence?
Adam’s apple.
What is the anatomical name for the Adam’s apple?
Laryngeal prominence.
What is the cartilage forming the laryngeal prominence?
Thyroid cartilage.
What is the structure preventing solids and liquids from entering the laryngeal inlet?
Epiglottis.
