What is a dermatome?
An area of the skin supplied by nerves from a single spinal root.

What do dermatomes correspond with in the chest wall?
Correspond with the intercostal spaces at and below the T2 dermatome.
How are dermatomes correspondent with the intercostal spaces?
The nerves from the lower 6 intercostal spaces project serially onto the anterior abdominal wall creating the correspondingly named dermatomes there.
Why does the C4 dermatome lie immediately above T2, instead of C5?
Discontinuity due to the extension of C5 within the upper limbs.
What does discontinuity between the extension of C5 within the upper limbs result in?
Results in the C4 dermatome lying immediately above T2 instead of C5.
What are the anatomical surface markings for dermatomes of the chest wall?
Sternal angle - T2
Nipple area - T4
Umbilicus - T10
Inguinal region - T12
