Upper Respiratory System Flashcards
Nostrils
provide entrance for air into the respiratory system
nasal cavity
filter, warm and moisten incoming air; resonance chambers for voice
nasal septum
divides nasal cavity into right and left sides
Superior, middle, and inferior nasal conchae
increases the surface area of the mucosa, enhancing air turbulence and aids in trapping large particles int he mucus
paranasal sinuses
act as resonance chambers for speech; warm and moisten incoming air
nasopharynx
provides for the passage of air from the nasal cavity; tonsils in the region provide protection against pathogens
oropharynx
provides for the passage of air and swallowed food; tonsila provide protection for pathogens
laryngopharynx
provides for the passage of air and swallowed food
larynx
air passageway; prevents food from entering the lower respiratory tract; responsible for voice production
thyroid cartilage
forms the framework of the larynx
cricoid cartilage
attaches the larynx to the cricotracheal ligament
arytenoid cartilage
anchor for vocal folds (true vocal cords)
epiglottis
forms a lid ove rthe larynx during swallowing
glottis
plays a role in the valsalva maneuver
posterior nasal aperture
provides and exit for the air into the nasopharynx
